Qualifications Required : The candidate should possess a minimum of 5 GCSE’s at grade A* - C (9-4) including Maths, English and Physical Education.
They should be working towards a Sports Qualification at the moment, holding a Level 2 Fitness Instructors Award would be desirable but not essential
Vacancy Full Description : Fitness Apprentice needed to work in a vibrant, forward thinking, and dynamic Occupational Health Unit within Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. This exciting opportunity will provide the opportunity to work alongside other Health and Fitness Professionals whilst developing the skills necessary to succeed as a Personal Trainer within the Health and Fitness Industry. You will work alongside the Service Fitness Advisor assisting in the promotion, development and co-ordination of all aspects of health and fitness whilst studying for a Level 3 Personal Trainer Award at Bedford College.
The apprentice will be required to assist the Occupational Health and Fitness team in the promotion, development and co-ordination of all aspects of Health and Fitness to comply with the statutory requirements of Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. They will also be required to assist the team in the delivery of Health and Wellbeing promotional activities as well as in attaining the corporate health and safety objectives.

The main duties and responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to the following:

• To assist in the provision of aerobic fitness testing to operational employees
• Design, tailor, coach and review effective exercise programmes to meet the needs of operational staff
• Maintain contemporaneous employee records ensuring confidentiality of patient information.
• Assist in the design and delivery of appropriate health promotions
• Present on fitness and wellbeing to a variety of internal audiences
• Assist in the provision of Nutritional consultations, analysing dietary habits and providing basic guidance
• Assist in the development and delivery of exercise sessions to small groups within the organisation
• To assist in the monitoring, review and maintenance of station gymnasium equipment.
• Attend college as required to fulfil the requirements of the (Level 3) Personal Trainer Qualifictaion
• To undertake any other duties of a similar nature and responsibility as required.
• To attend training and personal development courses as considered necessary

Working Week : 37hrs pw Mon - Fri (Flexitime) 8:30am - 4:30pm (some evenings)
Salary : £150.24 Per Week

Personal Qualities : Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service are looking for a candidate who is friendly, outgoing, organised and a good communicator. They should be comfortable talking to a diverse range of people of all ages. The candidate also needs to highly motivated and able at times to work independently on projects. They must be able to effectively meet deadlines and be able to manage a number of tasks simultaneously.
Skills Required : The successful applicant should hold a level 2 qualification in fitness instructing. A basic working knowledge of Anatomy and physiology, and the application of safe and effective exercises are essential. Candidates should also have some experience of delivering presentations to a range of individuals.
They should be computer literate and experienced in using application such as Microsoft Word, Excel or similar.
Future Prospects : On successful completion of the apprenticeship role the candidate will have received training in the fitness industry to support a future role in either fitness management or as a specialist instructor.
They will also have proven the benefits to the service of an extra asset within the OH department which could potentially lead to a more permanent role within the organisation, however this is not guaranteed.
The candidate will also be eligible to apply to become an Affiliate of the Charted Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) and a Member of the Register of Exercise Professionals.
Training to be Provided : The Apprenticeship will focus on preparing you for employment within the fitness industry. You will learn about Anatomy and Physiology, Health and Safety and designing exercise programmes, while gaining experience working in a leisure environment.

You will study to achieve the following qualifications:
•Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training
•Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Personal Training
•Level 3 Award in Employment Awareness in Active Leisure and Learning
•Level 2 Functional Skills (English and Maths).
Other Information : Candidates must attend an initial interview with a member of the Bedford College Apprenticeship Recruitment Team and complete an online Maths and English test which will be sent out prior to your initial interview if you meet the entry criteria. Please note this is part of the recruitment process and must be completed in order for your application to be progressed to the next stage.
Things to consider : This role is a mixture of office based work and visiting sites throughout the county. Whilst based at HQ in Kempston the role could require you to visit any one of our 14 other sites within Bedfordshire, reaching as far afield as Leighton Buzzard, and Luton. There will be some requirement to work occasional evenings to meet the needs of our Retained Firefighters.
